“How do I find a good Maths tutor in the UAE?”

It’s a question I see a lot online. It seems a lot trickier than you’d expect. I’m going to run through all the things you need to watch out for in this blog.

Is tutoring worth it? 

This is really subjective. Having worked in Breakthrough Maths for six years teaching students across Ireland, the UK and the UAE, I think the biggest thing that makes an impact here is students applying themselves.

When students apply themselves to our classes in Ireland, I have seen 91% of them increase their grades, and that has been consistent from their marks to the actual exams across Ireland and the UK. When students actively apply themselves, it really pays off, giving that consistency, accountability, and time learning maths is what moves the dial.

If a student is really only scratching the surface and only half-interested in tutoring, it’s simply not worth getting. It takes two to tango and a student must apply themselves to tutoring for it to be effective.

What years should get tutoring?

This question is subjective also. I mean I’ve tutored students’ maths from the age of seven right up to the age of twenty and I’ve seen benefits from the youngest ages to the oldest ages.

Tutoring is not just for exams. During COVID, tutoring really paid off as catch-up tutoring for students in younger years who missed certain chunks of school. That same effect happened when students are out sick for a long time. That same effect might now happen with Dubai, with the school closures because of the disruptions to schooling in 2026 and so now coming to 2027, it is probably prime time to get catch-up tutoring to fix all the gaps in knowledge that are missed this year.

How much does private tutoring cost? 

Private tutoring really is a newborn industry in the UAE. For a lot of places and countries, tutoring was essentially illegal and kind of done under the ‘hush-hush’ for a long time. Now, with tutoring opening up, it’s going to get a lot more structured and standardised and I’d expect the cost to come down a bit more as more companies like Breakthrough Maths enter the market and provide a standardised, consistent service.

Tutoring in general can cost upwards of €100 per hour. This is the equivalent of around 400 dirham per hour for private one-to-one tutoring. Group sessions are often a bit less expensive and you can expect to pay some in the region of 300 dirham per hour for private small group tutoring. 

With Breakthrough Maths it’s considerably less and our classes will work out at around 200 dirham per hour as we’re able to provide a top-notch service that’s different than tutoring at scale in our maths tutoring programme.

What should you look for in a Maths tutor?

Another mistake I see parents make is focusing only on qualifications. Qualifications matter, but they are only one piece of the puzzle.

A great Maths tutor should be able to explain difficult concepts clearly, keep students engaged, and build confidence over time. Consistency is also important. Students tend to perform best when they work with the same tutor each week and have a structured programme to follow.

I would also look for reviews, testimonials and evidence that students are actually improving. At the end of the day, results matter more than any marketing claim. The best tutors create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and gradually improving their understanding of Maths.
